Sticking it on is a good way to stop things leaking, but a whole lot messier when you come to pull it off. It's usually only needed on engines that have crappy pressed tin rattle covers the go all out of shape. Use a new gasket, make sure everythings clean, flat, etc. and you shouldn't have too many issues. If somethings damaged and it won't stop, then break out the goo.
