Wouldn't that still necessitate 1 & 4 being joined, and 2 & 3 being joined? (for 4-2-1 style).

Actually, i'm 90% sure it's not even possible to design a crank that would be balanced and have a firing order that would require 1 & 2 being joined and 3 & 4 being joined... (for an inline-4 that is)
