You could be dodgy and force them out with the steering rack still on.. but just take the damn rack off. Not that hard.
Its held on by 2 "clamp" style metal brackets that go over the top of it, which are held inplace by 2 bolts either side. Just jack the car up at a height where you can slide under and look up (makesure your stands are secure) and ubolt the rack, removie it and voi la.
from memory the 2bolts on the passenger side are from the top end, whilst the driver side has the rear bolt from the top, while the front bolt is actually from the bottom (theres a hole in the member/rail which u can put an extension socket in and get the bugger out)...
