You can get the timing cover off without dismantling the rest of the motor, however you can't get it back on properly, I should know, I've fucked a few. Just take the head off, it's not hard, and then fix your timing and put the head back on. The head bolt tension on the 18r head isn't crucial, considering the rings and so forth are probably screwed anyway. If you fuck the head I have two spare here anyway
