here is one of many links you can find simply by typing "peak oil" into google..

http://www.energybulletin.net/5816.html

its quite simple......it is costing more and more to find new deposits of oil, to the point where it is no longer economically viable to spend the money looking...

consumption is increasing at the rate of %2 anually....and will not slow as the effects of full on modernisation in india and china kick in......cant expect these contries to change...besides where do we get all those cheap dvd players from!!cant do without those...

production is at full capacity...oil companys are not going to invest in new refineries if they are not going to get good profits...(life span of a new refinery now is not looking good) as a guide no new refineries have been built in the usa in over 20yrs.....its basic economics, were on the peak of the bell curve and starting to head down slope ..

yes australia has almost enough oil to meet its own needs but its controlled by oil companys and besides any suggestion of the government taking control sounds a little too socialist - horror of horrors - free market means that the oil goes to the highest bidder reguardless of who owns it.....

yeah alternate energy is the way to go....we could also reduce the size of our vehicles (a new commodore weighs 1600+ kgs!!!) for eg my old Honda city weighed 650kg and got 100km off 6lts of fuel.....but buggered if I want to be in an accident with a soccer mum driving a V8 landcuiser so I dont drive it anymore......status and extravagance is the motto of the western way of life, how do u change that!!

but dont worry we can always buy an electric powered landcruiser instead......just build a couple of nuclear power stations, problem solved.....coincidence, the sudden talk of nuclear power in the media by the likes of government and bussiness....oh shhh dont talk about the waste but...
