If you look under the decklid of a standard mr2 turbo, nearly all of the venting has a tray under it, it covers more than 75% of the area.
The airflow for the right (intercooler) vent goes throught the cooler and then past the turbo (hot) then out the left side top of the lid. Cool air through intercooler from outside, the past turbo and out.
With top mount its cool air in, past turbo (hot air) and through cooler. So hot air hits the cooler, no matter how good the flow.
Think of a standard front engined car with a front mount, the intercooler is infront of the a/c and radiator and turbo. Going top mount will be like putting it behind all that.
The refference to porsche is to show the effectiveness of a well designed/ducted side mount, with a not excessive/huge core size.
And, don't kid yourself, sw20 turbo engine bays get REALY hot. And if you run high boost like your intending......
