anyone know if the 22re from corona or american hilux is the same as the australian 2.4 efi hiace motor?

I'm fairly certain the hiace is a 4y or something... NOT a 22R.
As for your first post - there are 2 versions of the 22R (carbed or efi), with slightly different comp rations, incompatible heads etc. Now, the rest of the world had the 22R engiens prior to 1985, then got the later version in '85 (i.e. in the '85 Celica), along with the latter TCCS EFI. In Australia, when we first got the 22RE in '85, it was the later version but had older analog EFI - probably because we didn't have ULP yet and the TCCS EFI requires an O2 sensor. Anyway, I believe that after that (i.e. 86+, such as Coronas etc), Aus 22REs have the later TCCS EFI and are the same as the US version.
So short answer - find out what car the guy with the 22RE hilux got the engine out of. I am not sure if all the bosses for the EFI manifolds etc are present on the later 22Rs - they may be there but untapped etc - best place to ask would be on the Old Celica Club mailing list (email mailing list, NOT the online forum) at www.celicas,org. They're the 2xR experts.
Hope this helps.
