Or another possibility is the problem is with your starter motor. You could have ripped some teeth of the starter fly out gear, or the flywheel itself.

This would give you the sound of the starter but the engine obviously wouldnt crank. I feel it could be this as you havent described any strange rubbing or whining noises coming from under the cam cover.

I would try putting the car in 1st and rocking the car back and forth with the aim of moving the car in one direction. This will turn the motor a few degrees which mayline up some good teeth on the flywheel to your starter.

OR

Unbolt the starter altogether and expect the teeth on both the fly out gear and the flywheel (you can peer in the hole left by the starter and see the edge of the flywheel to see if the teeth are buggered)

OR

Just try clutch starting the car (if manual) you will know straight away if your motor is seized or not.
