Sounds like your auto needs a service. If you're not keen on the effort/mess of taking the pan off and cleaning, adjusting, changing the oil, then go to an auto place - and basic service shouldn't cost all that much.
Either that, or the auto is beyond servicing
Make sure there's enough fluid in it to start with, though...
