prolly some crud blocking the jets in the carby.
we had this problem also.
after some wetlap drift action to stir up crud in the fuel tank
carby got blocked and was GAY.
we also had a problem with float level when cornering hard in the dry - due to the fuel getting thrown to one side inside the carby..
but this does not sound like your problem.
also had a problem with the fuel pump not pumping enough fuel..
ran fine.. take off flooring in in 1st, 2nd, and a bit into 3rd..
then just no fuel and car pretty much died for a while.
so.. start by checking float level when your car goes crap.. make sure there is fuel in there.
then replace (or add) inline fuel filter to the carby (ooh $2 from supercheap)
and try and clean carby jets.
pull out the needles n stuff.. (I dont REALLY know carbies)
but hope this helps
