Wayne, the bare blocks are almost identical, just small differences like the oil return line in the side, knock sensor hole, etc. Converting a 3TC-->3TG is like a 2T-->2TG, in that the 3T drive shaft in the block (cam for pushrod engines) needs to be replaced with the much shorter drive shaft in the 3TG, and the oil lobes for this cam need to be pushed over/blocked at the back where the cam once was. The oil pump, dizzy cover, crank(could use 3TC I think), pistons would have to be swapped aswell, unless you get the 3T pistons flycut. and then theres the timing gear on the front.
If you have a look at a 3TG block there is still the holes for the pushrods and cam, so the blocks were slightly updated but no major change, it should be easy converting one to the other. Also the engine numbers both start with 3Txxxxxxx, but I'm sure there must be some records of the difference in engine numbers between the two.
I'm thinking of registering my 3TG as a 3TC with 3TGTE head but no turbo (for now, until I get engineering sorted). Its all complicated, as strictly speaking a 2TG needs engineering as its an import and never came out in a TA22 in AUS, but then its the same block as a 2T. Same said for a 3TGTE!!
