The use of cast iron has very little to do with "pollutants". There are lots of engines getting around with cast iron blocks these days - the JZ series engines for example are iron, and I doubt there are huge numbers of these going to the Middle East. In this case, iron was more than likely chosen for its strength. Then there's engines like the Ford 4.0 and the Holden V6, both of which have iron blocks. In their case I would guess that cost is the biggest reason for its use, since iron is cheaper and easier to work with than aluminium alloy.
