You actually need 2 large hammers. Rather than hitting on the end of the thread, which will only bugger things up, you need to hold one hammer against the side, and hit the other side, to expand and 'break' the taper. With a bit of practice you'll laugh at how easy it really is. And if you damaged the old one, replace it - they're not that expensive, and lot cheaper than a new head!
