Not sure what everyone is trying to compare a 22re head with... it's not designed for high-rpm performance. It's got a 5500rpm top-end. It was designed for giving good torque down low. It's like the difference between 'G' and 'F' motors, for lack of a better analogy. You hear about guys trying to use the 20R head and that just raises your rpm range and reduces your low-end torque. Where do you want power if it's a street car?
Anyway that said... I ported and polished my stock 22re head. No other mods. The difference was night and day... it is definitely worth the effort. I'll try and get you a sound bite if you want to hear it in action... don't have a 'before' to compare with however.
By comparison, I ported and polished a 5m-ge (spent triple the amount of time working it compared to my quick job on the 22re) and there was little difference, it was better but nothing to warrant all the work that went into it. The 22re head ported and polished was awesome... night and day. Never had it dynoed, can't give you any real numbers but it feels better, runs better, gets better mileage and to top it all off, it sounds super cool.
