I'll go into slight detail too:
There's a plug with 3 wires that goes straight down near the back of the transmission (not the two speed sensor plugs though!) These three wires are for shift A, shift B and TCC (torque converter clutch)
Shift A only: 1st
Shift A+B: 2nd
Shift B only: 3rd
No power: 4th
Applying power to TCC will lock the converter up at any time, and you can't just be indescriminate with it, it locks up enough to stall the engine.
I can't help with wire colours because I don't know them for the exact piece of wire on your box, but it's not hard to work out.
