recently i brought a 4age bottom end and to my suprise when i removed the old head gasket it had on it i found what im 98% sure is o-ringing  but what i want to know now is can i still use a standard type head gasket? or do i need a copper one ( the reason i ask is because i have only ever heard of o-ringing being used in conjunction with a copper gasket).

Yes it can be done, but usually the o-ring itself is smaller in diameter so there is less 'crush' on the gasket.
