I sometimes use a press because I've got one, but otherwise a hammer, used with some CARE, is fine. Usually to pull them in I tap them a little bit from behind, pull in with an old wheelnut (rattlegun means this only takes a second, long as you're careful), then check with socket+breaker bar. Don't just grab a hammer and randomly belt everything in sight though.
