There is a reason for the letterbox format, and that it is because our brain and eyes can register it more clearly. It may shit you because you are used to the old style.
Try watching them on a TV with a proper aspect ratio. You can make it fill the screen and it doesn't go stuffed, its absolutely awesome. Mind you, for the moment, normal TV looks a little stuffed
