Bubbles in the water is a classic sign on a head gasket death. Xhexk the oil as well and see if there is any water sitting on top of the oil in the sump. You might only have a leak between a cylinder and the water jacket. You would get these bubbles with water or coolant.
I've had a similar thing where i couldnt get a definate leak useing a preasure tester, but when i pulled the head off the head gasket had gone, but it was a very small leak.
A few things to check beffore whiping the head off:
- hoses. are they old and dying?
- thermostat housing, no leaks?
- leaks around the water pump
- radiator cap. This may also explaine whay it isnt pulling coolant back from the over flow bottle. (a new radiator cap and do wonders sometimes)
also, put your hand behind the exhaust and see if it gets wet quickly. This would be a good sige that water is betting pulled through the combustion chambers.
The head gasket is easy to change, I've done it in a day by myself, but the head and block didnt require any work.
Oh, and only use water to test for a leak after say putting a radiator or water pump back in. Run coolant! Running stright water for a long time will do 'bad things'(tm). Also, coolant has a higher boiling point, so is able to do its job to a higher temp.
