it wasnt just one Major problem. There was 4 minor problems. the alternator tension bracket had broken, so even though the nut was tight the bracket was still moving. The belt had a tiny little crack in it so it wasnt running smoothly across the pulleys. Hidden in the wiring was a second plug which had to piggy back the first plug (when i connected this the charge light dimmed and went out) and the fuse link box on the positive battery terminal had blown.
