I currently have the following 6-cyl options that I know of
5M, 5MG, 6MG (rare), 7MG, 7MGT, 1JZ, 1JZT, 2JZ, 2JZTT, 1GGT (extremely rare), or the engines from the trucks or camry/solara.
My 4-cyl options include 22R/hybrids, RG/hybrids, 4AG, 3SGT, and several new models like the 1ZZ/2ZZ and the truck's 2.7L beast!
There is also the V8 from the Lexus (the 1U) and the truck (can't find the truck engine code ATM)

I think you can scratch most of the small engines off that list. You'll want torque. Plus you've got a chassis designed to take a huge I6, so why not put one in.
Depends on your power requirements, but I'd say the 1JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GTE would be your best option.
The 1UZ is good, but as has been stated before, it will not make power until you dump a lot of money into it.

Anyway - I know Nark loves his 1G, (and others do too it seems!)all the engines have their strengths and wweaknesses

It's not that I love the 1G, I just think that it's the best bang for the buck option in a street driven RWD Celica. Nothing else comes close to giving you the same power and drivability for that amount of money.

Ah yes, I heard that they were doing something like that. Based completely on the Targa Tassie. Sounds like it went good too.

As to the engines - I'm looking to decide on one. I love the cammed-up big displacement 4-cyl. (read .495 lift/280* cam in a 22RE), but grew up romping V8's and enjoy that too! The smoothness and wiiiiide power band of the I6 engines is awesome, but I'm concerned I will need displacement merely for torque in a 2800LB car.

Forget the 22R. Americans (read: OCC) love it 'coz they've got nothing else to choose from. It's a truck engine no matter which way you look at it. Putting one into an MA47 would be sacrilegious.
