Most engine oil coolers I've seen have tended to be a higher flow design. More open or even just a series of tubes. There are exceptions of course that are like a radiator.
Trans coolers are usually like a radiator in design being a series of tubes/fins. Of course there are exceptions like some original equipment designs that run through the radiatior tanks.
The Trans runs very hot so any reduction in temp is good thats why it doesn't worry it to run through 100c water. But external designs would be better for cooling. But engine oil should be running at a certain temp.
