Carbie problem?

i got a 4af. every now and then when i go to start it, it wont kick over, for up to like 10secs of throttle play. one it finally does, it chockes and blows smoke. ive never had a mechanical problem with the car, and it was in my family since new.
my diagnostic is a flooding carbie. sytoms apart from this slow start, which only happens wen warm and off for a few minutes, is a slightly high idle. would this high idle be causing more fuel to fill the carbie wen on idol, then neccesary, so that wen i turn the car off it causes it to flood? then the tough start, could this be cause its flooded and 'drowning'? i notice once it finally turns over and i back on and off the throttle, it back fires, (i think), but that might be a leak ive had for a while jus emphasized...
happened to me a few times in the last few weeks. how would i fix this? jus lower the idol? do i do that whilst the engine is running or off, then check, then off, then check? etc.
thanks in advance guys,
jason
