A CPS send the ECU a signal which allows it to determing where the engine it in its rotational cycle, and by referencing with a clock speed, how fast it is turning. The ECU the send an ignition siqnal to the ignitor pack, which amplifys the signal and send it to the coil pack. Coil pack transforms this to extremely high voltage and sparks the plugs.
In the case of an electronic distributor, the distributor sends a signal to the ecu, ecu fires a coil, and the high tension spark signals are distributed by the rotor turning under the cap of the distributor, to each of the spark plugs.
