You can always rely on the Chuckster for a decent answer!
Believe it or not you can actually run one of these alternators in your car with only the battery wire connected. The alternator will self excite if it has decent magnets and start charging when you get above 1000 revs and keep on going from there. I dont know if this would be bad for the diodes or diode pack so i've actually ran a feed from the black/yellow with a bulb in line to excite it. My charging light is on constantly now but I can monitor the battery voltage with the voltmeter. Interestignly enough if you remove the bulb form the charging light the automatic choke stops working as its connected to the charging light relay.
I've upgraded the battery chargign cable to 110 amp stuff from jaycar. Its made a good difference when you load up the charging system. Think of how many people you know that have spent big bucks on their amps and amp wire and left the original crappy charging wire on the alternator. I converted it because my collection of 18r alternators were all pretty much knackered and I got the ford internally regulated one for 45 bucks and it was nearly new. Works good.
