thanks maurice - a vote of confidence 
fwiw, i ended up putting a 100A bosch alternator in from a stationary genset (not the main alt, but the thing to keep starting battery topped up). the thing needed a few rpm to kill the charge light so i probably didn't hookup the right cable to the ign plug.
had to modify the mount bracket to suit the alt case, but it never ran out of voltage regardless of how many fans or lights were running
