once you get out of the r-series engines (which imho is a good idea ) you're looking at $$$ any way you do it. 1g-gte is going to be the best bang-for-buck option, as the custom work is not massive. 3s-gte will required arseloads of fabrication and other exxy stuff.
and don't orget to add the price of an efi conversion when you're estimating costs!
for a 1g, your main initial costs will be: half cut, exhaust, intercooler & piping, efi conversion, engine mounts (if you're good enough to do this yourself, it'll probably cost you about $20).
then, as stated, you'll have to think seriously about a new diff, and a w58 to put behind the 1g.
