An LSD is a Limited Slip Differential - with a normal diff, the bulk of power goes to the wheel with the least grip (thats why the one stuck in the mud always spins!). The idea of a limited slipper is to add some kind of device (clutches, cones, viscous pack, etc.) between the axles to allow both of them to grip to a reasonable extent at all times, while still allowing the car to be steering easily, which is why the diff is there in the first place. Basically an LSD has 2 purposes: 1. To improve traction, meaning some torque goes to both wheels not all to one spinning wheel 2. To allow some of us fools to slide the arse end of our cars all over the place. Highly stupid practice, of course [Report message to a moderator]
