"The championship of the world of the marks just like the championship of Germany of circuits (DRM) were, between 1976 and 1981, the kept hunting of Porsche 935, at least in the category of more than 2,0 liters. Admittedly a handle of manufacturers like BMW, Ford or Lancia tried well to break the hegemony of the German manufacturer but the success only too seldom smiled to these daring. Then there also were some private initiatives of which some could shine in a very occasional way. One counts among those the Toyota Celica LB Turbo that the TEAM Schnitzer, historically related to BMW (in particular in Tourism), developed for German championship DRM 1978. Taking for base Celica Hatchback 2000 WP, Schnitzer applied many modifications to make of this half-compartment a true silhouette. The changes brought to the case relate to at the same time the frame and the body. And concerning the frame, this one has sudden such modifications that it became unrecognizable. Side body, the caps, roof and doors in particular preserved their materials of origin in order to respect the regulation groups 5 of them. For the remainder, the wings, the back aileron and the shields, inter alia, they were rebuilt out of glass fibre. Result the weight of the unit goes down to 860 kg. The engine has, also, is the subject to him of a deep recasting. Based on E 4 cylinders Toyota 18R standard G, the block of Celica LB Turbo is equipped with a cylinder head with 16 valves manufactured by Schnitzer. The cubic capacity is rebored with 2,1 liters and a system of Kugelfischer injection is installed. These new elements to which a turbo KKK is added make it possible to draw the trifle from 560 horses. Controlled by Rolf Stommelen the car carries out tests on several European circuits, from of which that of the Paul Ricard, before beginning in competition at the time of the race from the s.t.o.l Trophy de Zolder, in 1977. With the hands of Harald Ertl, Toyota created the surprise while imposing itself in front of Konrad (Porsche turbo), Ludwig (turbo BMW 2002) and Marc Surer (turbo BMW 320). But its beginnings in DRM take place only starting from the inaugural sleeve of season 78 run on the track of Zolder, to Belgium. Tenth on the starting grid, the Toyota gives up after only 2 turns on mechanical breakdown. The car makes its reappearance in the discipline in the 3rd test on Nürburgring. Always to the hands of Stommelen, the machine offers only one poor service withdrawing itself after 4 loops. After having made the dead end on the race of Avus Celica Turbo makes its return at the time of the following sleeve of Mainz-Finthen. Qualified the good last of more than 2,0 liters, Stommelen manages nevertheless to rejoin the arrival for the first time of the season, in 8th position. The car misses the two following sleeves again and returns in Hockenheim where it is eliminated on accident in the 7th turn whereas its pilot had qualified himself 6th. Of return to Zolder, in August, Stommelen is once again constrained with the abandonment. However it is not this new against-performance which is at the origin of its withdrawal of the competition. Indeed, whereas its performances start to become interesting, its development is abandoned at the end of this August 78 following the founder of the TEAM and instigator of the project, Joseph Schnitzer. Single extra exit - DRM, 1000 km of Nürburgring (May 28 78) which counts for the championship of the world of the marks Groupe 5 see the participation of the Toyota Celica LB Turbo of Toyota Germany in the wheel of which Stommelen makes team with Harald Ertl. The two German pilots qualify their mounting in brilliant a 6th place but are constrained with a final withdrawal in the 78ème turn, the pump water is broken."
