Wilbo,
The most likely cause of your problem (by the sounds of it) is the cold start air bypass valve which opens up when the engine is cold and allows air into the engine by-passing the throttle body. This valve is known to disfunction after a fair bit of use. So if you can replace it (or even adjust it if that is possible by taking it apart), that would be the go.
