Apart from stopping all the coolant from spilling out, it's job is to make sure that the cooling system is running at the correct pressure. If the pressure is low, then the water will boil at a lower pressure -bad-. You may find that the 1jz runs at a higher pressure than a 7M or your cap is stuffed. Probably a good idea to get the system pressure checked as well. As far as airflow through the radiator is concerned, what most people forget that the air has to get out of the engine bay as well. Car manufacturers spend a lot of money looking at the aerodynamics of a cooling system and the hardest part to get right is getting rid of the pressure buildup in the engine bay [Report message to a moderator]
