Naturally, it's far more inefficient to run something with electrics rather than directly (for the most part - diesel electric trains and similiar are a different matter!), but then when your thermo fan runs, say, 1% of the time whereas the directly driven one runs all the time, its obvious why there's big gains to be had. Eventually, we'll see something more intelligent to operate valves that will do away with camshafts that have to run at full lift against full spring pressure all the time - think about how much energy is wasted there!
