After replacing both timing chains on my 18rc 2 weeks back, I can say, if your going to do it, do it properly. Yes the people at toyota were smoking something when they decided that you'd need to take the head off to replace a bloody timing chain but, if you do it properly then at least you really have the right to bitch about it then. My motor had eaten it's top chain guide, and broken the botom chain guide.
To be honest, not only did I pull the head off, I removed the whole engine, much easyer to work on and heaps quicker than stuffing around having a bitch of a time getting at all the bloddy bolts you cant see, hidding behind the fuel pump and air con. Anyway, it's crap design, but it does work at least.
