The ferry cost me about $110 dollars per person when I brought my car back and yes its an overnight thing. You will pay more for a cabin on the boat. As for renting, I'm starting to look myself actually, Zero Davey and Salamanca Mews are very swish and probably out of the average persons budget. Glebe, Battery Point and North Hobart'ish would be your best bet, there are some alright apartments around its just a matter of finding them. Keep in mind that the Ferry comes in at Devonport in the North of the state and it will take you a good 3 - 4 hours to drive to Hobart from there.
