In fact I have now done exactly this I dilled large holes in the top of the air cleaner outboard of the filter, this though still impedes the performance so its not just air volume that is the problem, I suspect that the dome on the underside of the top plate is cursing non laminar air flow and this is the problem for if I remove the top the increase as measured by my test is dramatic. I will in the short term just change the carb, next year I will decide weather to get ether a new car or keep this, if I keep this car I will put a twin-cam of some description and do other mods to the car to modernize it - but not change its external appearance.
