Becareful about that stuff
There are a lot of pros and cons for using it.
The most popular brake fluids used in todays cars are DOT 3 and DOT 4, both of which are clear to amber in color.
Sometimes used is DOT 5 fluid which can be recognized by it's purple color. DOT 5 fluids are typically silicone-based. DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids are polyglycol.
Hydraulic system mineral oil brake fluid [HSMO] is a blend of mineral oil and additives. It is the most rare, the most expensive, and is not compatible with any other fluids.
DOT 5 fluids have been developed for military applications, i.e. for vehicles that could stand in storage for years, without maintenance, yet had to perform immediately when required. They are superior in terms of boiling point retention and corrosion/conservation properties, since they don't absorb water. Use in military vehicles and old timers is still the prime application of silicone based fluids. To date car manufacturers have not moved to use silicone fluids for first fill regular cars for three reasons:
1. Low air solubility, which leads to a spongy brake pedal feel.
2. No water solubility whatsoever; water that gets in the system by accident (e.g. spray water into the reservoir) is then corrosive, can freeze at 0° C or boil at 100° C
3. Silicone fluid does not dissolve car paints. However, paint surfaces contaminated with silicone fluid are almost impossible to repaint due to very poor adhesion.
Dot 5 cannot be used in cars equiped with ABS because of trouble with bleeding..
-If changing from DOT 3 or DOT 4 to DOT 5 or vice versa, it is recommended to change all rubber seals.
It'd be better to buy a high quality DOT4 and change it often, a lot of people have had trouble with seals when switching.
