The problem is more to do with being at full lock for extended periods. This will induce around 1300psi in the power steering system. Normally the is no back pressure on the power steering pump. When the steering wheel is turned, a few hundred psi is generated while the wheel is moving, and then the pressure drops to almost nothing. If you are at full lock for long periods, the pump will be working against around 1300psi backpressure. Underdriving the pump may help the pump last slightly longer, but will not reduce the backpressure.
