i would say your friend has never seen the throttle valve on an unloaded engine. last time i checked, even when the engine was at 6000, the valve was still almost closed. yet when fully loaded, the valve was wide open. call me crazy, but to me that proves that fuel consumption is related to load and not revs.

you dont need much pressure in the cylinders to overcome the internal friction of the bearings. therefore you dont need the fuel or the airflow
