1L over a couple of months isnt too bad but what oil are you using? if its a synthetic then switch back to organic...something like penrite 30 isnt too bad, the 4A engines tolerances suit a slightly thicker oil and synthetics will tend to "burn off" a lot more
As for compression test I dont know what they cost but you can pick up the tool to do it form about $50 upward, which Im guessing is about what a mechanic would charge anyhow.
Yes the blowing of smoke will get worse if you dont fix it, sounds more and more like a stem seal leak especially if you think the engine is still strong.
