This guy at work snapped the timing belt - the celica is in at the local mechanic (only 97k kms) They ripped the Head off it, they have some autodata mechanics book that said it can cause engine damage. All the pistons look fine, they sent the head off to the reconditioner. Apparently they checked with the reconditioner first and he said intereference aswell.. (he could be lying) SO now they say $2800 for a top end recondition - with new belt and water pump. I was there with him saying that I rang 2 toyota dealerships and both said non interference there answer to this was "yeah theyd replace the belt then start the engine and find youve bent a valve" I also asked how about a 2nd hand engine..they said they cant find anyplace that will give warranty. I also asked how much labour would be required to remove and replace with a new motor in ...12hours!!!! I reckon he should get the car out of there. What should have been 300-500 or 700 if water pump done is now 2800!! [Report message to a moderator]
