Hi,
Sitting around doesn't hurt the Solexs very much, but their age is the killer. The gaskets and diaphrams get hard and breakdown and the jets in the Solex, assuming it's never been regularly tuned, go out of adjustment.
No doubt they've never been tuned or rebuilt and are therefore getting onto quarter of a century old without being serviced.
Mine were like that too and I bit the bullet and I went to Frank Kleinig Motors, where the old dog Frank himself (the guru of Solex and Webers) did the rebuilding job, tuning and dyno'd the car himself.
It cost me $770 and it may sound expensive, but by god the engine was like a new motor afterwards and it still purrs along sweetly, with no flat spots and it's great.
He does a top-notch job, and trust me, it's worth it if you want your engine running sweetly. The carby sets are a couple of hundred dollars each and you'll need two sets.
These carbs need a specialist who knows this old school stuff and who knows what they're doing. Don't waste your time going to a backyard hacker or anyone that thinks they know it all 'cos they can tune a lawnmower engine - the Solex are a little more finicky and complicated and require an expert to get them running properly. And, how sweet they sound and how nice is your 18RG after they've been done.
In a nutshell, if you value your engine and want the best from it then unfortunately you're going to have to fork out a whack of money to get those babies sucking sweetly.
Of course, if you can't find a suitable carby tuner, you can always put on a dress and out in EFI!
I am not sure if Frank Kleinig is around anymore. I heard he has recently retired, which is a damn shame 'cos I wouldn't take my engine to anyone else. But, check the phone book. I think he was at Girraween.
