the last three 2tgs I built and rebuilt in the last 2 months I didn't put any sealer on the head gasket. I only every put a thin layer of grease on the block, and on the head, then wack the gasket on and off she goes. that said I do use a sealent on all the paper type gaskets, eg. water pump, timing case, thermostate housing, and some times the sump, depends if it's cork or a rubber one.

Never had any problems, and also if you need to take the head off againg it makes the gasket 100 times easier to take off.
