The VVTi engines are also higher compression; 9.0:1 vs 8.5:1 for the older 1JZ's. This combined with the VVTi will spool up any given turbo much faster. It's no coincidence that the VVTi makes max torque 2000rpm sooner than the 1JZ!
I haven't heard anything bad about their reliability. The internal construction of the engine is much the same.
