the 18RC's reduced performance certainly came (in part) from:
-smog equipment (air pump, EGR)
-compression
-ignition timing
-disabled carbi
am not sure whether the cam changed - i had mine reground to suit the turbo. only way would be to compare casting marks on early/late model cams.
i dont think the head changed much with the introuction of smog equipment. (note: 18RG pistons will not fit).
the external upper-chain tensioner is the one to get (older, but better)
would suggest:
-largish extractors (long primarys will help to a point)
-aggressive ignition timing (if you can keep fuel up to it)
-bigger spark (bigger ocil? a jaycar/DSE CDI unit would be good. or just the electronic spark from an 18RG)
-CAI (clean, cool air instead of engine bay heat
-remote oil-cooler (ford sandwich plate fits but you will need a shorter filter to prevent hitting the dizzi
-proper balance when rebuilding
-open up exhaust ports to suit extractors
chees, charles.
