If he wants a 4A-GE, tell him to get a Twincam AE82. It'll be cheaper and more reliable than converting a 4A-C AE82 to 4A-GE, and upgrading breaks ETC. I'd get another one for cheap, drop it in, get the one your mate has and re-build it, then swap them back over and re-sell the temp engine, or keep it for spares or something. Or just find a good condition 4A-C. Should be able to find one for $300 or less. Still I don't think 4A-Cs last as long as most Toyota engines, and they're all getting a bit long in the tooth.
