TWICE.... Well, that was back then, and in a large and bloody war. The amount of time, money and massive loss of life to both the allies and the Japs would of been horrendous without using nukes. Basically, it had to be done and it was. A lot of you would of done the same thing, given the same circumstances. You could either keep fighting, almost hand-to-hand across all of Japan - which would result in hundreds of thousands of your troops being killed (along with the policital and emotional backlash of your own population for such a loss of life), as well as more Jap troops and civilains being killed in this type of combat, plus it would of taken another year to end the war. Simple choice really.... drop a nuke or two and hope they capitulate so we can end this bloodshed. Besides, the most devastating loss of civilain life was from the incendiary bomb attacks, not nukes. B29s would fly in large formations over the Jap cities and drop thousands and thousands of small 5kg incendiary bombs. The Jap cities, being mostly build with wood and paper, went up in flames and devoured entire cities and populations. Similar to the incediary bombs dropped by the allies on Dresden and Hamburg in Germany during WW2 - they too were where the greatest loss of civilian life occurred. seeyuzz river [Report message to a moderator]
