Is this the first time you have run the microtech?
Sounds like a few teething problems your having.
Check there is power on the positive side of the coils permanently when you turn on your ignition.
The Microtech only sinks the current from the coils. It returns the current to the battery through that main negative wire but you've now checked that and the Microtech now turns on indicating your negative is somewhat adequate.
