sounds to me like a problem with your master cylinder... your sugegstion of the return spring is probably not too far wrong... did you build the master cylinder yourself? if so then pull it off again (not hard) and take it to a brake place to have it checked out... even if it means paying for another rebuild, better than your life... never skimp when it comes to brakes!!!
