Wed, 05 March 2003 13:07 That stuff about harmonics/revs is VERY true - the stocky roughly cast crank, the fact that it's a V6, rough assembly, etc. really makes them hate revs - see how many harmonic balancers they can throw apart if given a hard time Thing is, there's no need (or point!) giving them revs, capacity does the job. On the VN being rougher, nothing beats the sound of a high KM VN on cold start... But anyways, I'm not here to pick on commodores. I still say that the lampshade filter kit is $ wasted more than anything - mild exhaust and trans mods (including diff gears) are the way to go, then if you want to spend a bit more cam and chip (and head shave!) are also good. Also a couple of other ones: 1. Use NGK BP6EFS13 plugs - mainly essential if it's on gas, but no harm all the same, it probably could do with a new set anyways 2. The timing chains stretch like buggery on these things, and some a lot more than others. We've got 2 VR's in our family, one a manual one auto. Both have similiar mileage, and have led relatively easy lives. The auto one is pretty much typical, whereas the manual one is severely low on guts, as in no matter how severly the clutch is dropped, it will not do a burnout at all, and there's nothing else wrong with the car either (just replaced the clutch too - the bloody fork bent over, as they do on these cars!). I can get my 2tc powered(!) ke55 to crack a credible burnout, so it's not that I'm not brutal enough! Also on compression, the VN+VP are 8.5, the VR is 9.0, and VS on are 9.4, and supercharged 8.2. The ECOTEC bottom ends are definately weak - seem to be good at throwing bearings, rods, etc. [Report message to a moderator]
