He actually had an oesophageal carcinoma. The oesophagus is the food pipe that connects the mouth to the stomach. The fact that he had 'throat and stomach cancer' suggests that his tumour involved the bottom end of his food pipe just near where it connects to the stomach. Another possibilty is that with moderately advanced disease, the tumour can spread to the lymph nodes in the neck (the 'glands' that become sore when you have a sore throat).
This type of tumour is rapidly lethal. Cure can really only be expected if one undergoes an oesophagectomy (surgical removal of this tube), and, in most instances, this procedure is really only palliative.
